Day 221 - June 3, 2013: Half Moon Bay Marina at Croton-on-Hudson

After a restful morning, we moved just a short distance to the Half Moon Bay Marina, which is adjacent to the town of Croton-on-Hudson. This is a popular marina for loopers, as it is an easy day up the Hudson River from New York City.

After having packed in so much each day in the city, we welcomed what some boaters call "a zero mile day." I decided to do some minor maintenance while Anne worked hard to finish our plans for seeing the Hudson River Valley. She is very thorough in her research and planning, and it means we are well organized to see the many things available in each location. This afternoon, we rented a car for tomorrow's touring of the area, and then spent some time having "docktails" with four other looping couples.

The Hudson River was named after Henry Hudson, an English explorer sailing for the Dutch East India Company, who explored it in 1609. This river is actually an estuary, being filled by the Atlantic Ocean's rising and falling tides. Very little of the water here is fresh water coming from tributaries to the north. As a result, there are strong tidal currents all the way up to Troy. We are currently in Haverstraw Bay which is the widest part of the river, and it will narrow significantly as we approach West Point.

One thing we had noticed yesterday on the river was that the shores are lined with high stands of thick green trees or rock cliffs with few areas revealing any signs of civilization. This created a sense of peacefulness and enhanced our appreciation of the wildlife. This afternoon, when the driver came to take us to pick up our rental car, it became clear that behind all this glory there were indeed homes, shopping centers, and freeways much like you would find anywhere in the USA. However, I am sure that knowing this will not in any way spoil our continuing experience of this great river.
