Day 20 - October 3, 2012: Kentucky Lake to Pebble Island Marina

One does not cruise these beautiful waters experiencing so many new places and people and loose touch with the rest of what is happening in the world. To stay connected, we have two laptops, two smart phones, a Sirius AM/FM radio, a digital high definition TV and an Ipad.

One item of interest is the presidential debates, and in order to watch the first one we decided the next stop would be Pebble Isle Marina.

It turns out this marina is on the site of a unique Civil War battle. This site was then called Johnsonville and was a Union Army river port resupply depot. The supplies went downriver from the St. Louis and Minneapolis areas to this depot and from here to Nashville (which the Union Army controlled) by train.

While most of us are very familiar with head to head field battles such as Gettysburg and Shiloh, this battle is less known. It was an attack by Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his cavalry on the supplies needed by the North to sustain the war in the South. Forrest, using canons from across the river, managed to completely destroy the depot and 8 million dollars of supplies. We toured the historic park's visitors center and tomorrow we will walk through the Johnsville State Historic Park and museum.
