This was decision day. Were we going to spend a few days going up the St. John's River, or not, before going back to Michigan for a couple of weeks? We had been struggling with this for several days.
The St. John's River, with its many tributaries, takes one back to old Florida, as it winds through lakes and narrows and disappears almost 310 miles to the south. Alligators, wading birds, water fowl, and sea creatures are abundant. Its length really demands a week or more to fully explore, time we did not have before our plane reservations on Thursday. We had hoped a shorter three-day excursion would at least give us a taste of this treasure.
Then, late last week, an arctic cold front, one of so many this winter, began to sweep down through the Midwest, with its tail in northern Florida. Yesterday freeze warnings were put in place for today and tomorrow. This morning we awakened to temperatures in the 30s, and it may get into the 20s tonight.
Our destination was to be Six Mile Creek, which has rich scenery and animal life, but only an old dock, with no electricity or water and one restaurant. The idea of trying to enjoy this with sub-freezing weather, and running a noisy generator to keep warm, finally made it clear that the St. John's was not to be -- at least on this trip!
So, we moved a few miles to the Ortega River and got settled in the very nice Marina at Ortega Landing, which is a highly rated marina near shopping and restaurants. We will stay here and enjoy this area until we fly back.
